Understand
In 1765, the British arrived in Sylhet, a region known for its trade in silk, cotton goods, iron, wax, honey, and ivory. The Khasis, locals of Sylhet, would travel to Pandua to exchange these goods for rice, salt, and dried fish. The British got involved in the limestone trade and established contact with the Khasis. In 1824, the Burmese invaded Cachar, prompting the British to reinforce the Jaintia Rajahs troops. A friendship treaty was signed, and the British troops were allowed passage through the territories of the Khasi chiefs. After quelling an uprising, the British completed a road in 1829 connecting Assam valley with Surma valley, thanks to agreements with the Khasi chiefs. The British gradually gained control over mineral deposits, subdued the chiefs, and took charge of the judiciary.
