Behold the majestic L'Mdina, a name that resonates with power and heritage. In Arabic, it means "fortified place," and this ancient town has truly stood the test of time. The Romans recognized its significance and separated it from the rest of the settlement, which eventually became Rabat, meaning "suburb." With a history dating back to Phoenician times, L'Mdina proudly claims a splendid legacy of 3000 years. Once the capital of Malta, L'Mdina was the residence of the esteemed Maltese aristocracy. Even today, families like the Inguanez have inhabited this astounding place for over six centuries. Its grandeur extends to the presence of the Maltese bishop and the magnificent Mdina cathedral, still holding its esteemed position above the co-cathedral of St. John. Did you know that L'Mdina played a pivotal role during the Great Siege of 1565? The Turks directed their attack towards Birgu instead, as the Knights had chosen it as their new capital. However, Mdina was mere moments away from being seized when a local nun had a divine vision. A grand procession celebrating God filled the town's walls, creating an illusion of a strong defense to the Turkish army. They left Mdina untouched, forever grateful to that courageous nun. While knights and British rule gradually diminished L'Mdina's political importance, it transformed into the captivating "silent city." Nowadays, the town is experiencing a revival, with the restoration of palazzos once belonging to the elite. Tourists now breathe life into its streets, although only 400 lucky residents call this magical place home. L'Mdina is a living testament to history, resilience, and the power of human spirit!
