Mayflower Bocawina National Park, located near Hopkins and Silk Creek, offers a magnificent blend of partially excavated Mayan ruins and a small museum showcasing the fascinating dig discoveries as well as the local flora and fauna. The park presents adventure-seekers with several exhilarating hiking trails to explore. One notable trail takes adventurers to the awe-inspiring Antelope Falls. Initially, the trail appears relatively flat, revealing a jungle-covered ancient ruin along the way. However, as it nears the creek, the temperature rises, and the trail becomes quite steep. Fear not, for ropes have been thoughtfully placed in specific spots to assist trekkers. While the trail may exhibit some signs of erosion, it remains clearly visible, ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey. Established in 2001, Mayflower Bocawina National Park encompasses areas of Belize's FIRST protected area, the Silk Grass Forest Reserve. The park operates through a collaborative effort between local stakeholders, including Friends of Mayflower, the Conservation Division of Belize Forestry Department, and the Archaeology Department. The inception of this remarkable national park originated from the visionary minds of the Stann Creek Tour Guide Association. Recognizing the need for additional attractions besides the barrier reef and offshore cayes, the Association spearheaded a steering committee comprised of members from various local stakeholder groups and passionate supporters. The United Nations Development Programme/Global Environmental Fund generously provided the initial financial assistance, which enabled the hosting of community meetings and the formulation of a comprehensive development plan. Subsequently, the Steering Committee, in coordination with the District's Women's Development Officer, conducted intensive training for 169 stakeholders. The funding for this training program was supplied by Belize's Basic Needs Trust Fund, covering a wide range of topics encompassing Small Business Skills, Hospitality Management Skills, Handicraft Training, and Conservation of Protected Areas. The core mission behind Mayflower Bocawina National Park is to safeguard the area's remarkable biodiversity while simultaneously assisting in the alleviation of poverty within the stakeholder base. Since the declaration of this national park, numerous successful projects have been completed, courtesy of funding by prominent organizations such as UNDP/GEF, Ford Motor Company Foundation, Jaguar Fund, PACT (Protected Areas Conservation Trust), and BNTF.
