The picturesque village of Matala is centered around the beautiful Matala Beach, a natural bay with crystal clear sparkling waters. At the northern side of the bay, you will find the remarkable Matala Caves carved into the sandstone rock cliff. These incredible structures have a rich history and are believed to have been created by either the Romans or early Christians. During the 1960s, Matala became a haven for hippies, who made these caves their home. Their free-spirited lifestyle and the town itself were immortalized in Joni Mitchell's famous song "Carey" in 1971. Although the hippies have long since departed, their legacy lives on, and Matala still exudes a vibrant and laid-back hippy vibe. As you explore the town, you'll come across charming beach bars, local artisans selling unique crafts, and bustling market-style shopping. Matala's atmosphere is truly enchanting, reminiscent of a bygone era. Fun fact: In ancient Greek mythology, Matala Beach is said to be the spot where Zeus, disguised as a bull, brought Princess Europa after seducing and kidnapping her.
