Embark on a historical voyage through Mali, a land of rich heritage and fascinating stories. The Sudanese Republic and Senegal gained independence from France on September 22, 1960, forming the Mali Federation. However, the initial alliance was short-lived, as Senegal withdrew after only a few months, leading to the Sudanese Republic being renamed Mali. For many years, dictatorship ruled over the nation until 1991, when the country witnessed its first democratic presidential elections in 1992. Mali boasts a diverse population, with nearly half of its people being under the age of 15. The majority of Malians practice Islam, with a small number embracing indigenous beliefs and Christianity. Marvel at the nomadic communities that make up around 10% of the population, and immerse yourself in the vibrant agricultural and fishing industries that sustain the country. Make sure not to miss the incredible Festival in the Desert, held annually in January, where you can revel in three days of extraordinary music, under the enchanting starlit skies, amidst tiny tents, thrilling camel races, and a whirlwind of lively music and dancing.
