This isolated town lacks a railway and the only road out is impassable in the summer, except for the most rugged off-road vehicles. In its historical context, Magadan served as a gateway to the infamous Kolyma Gulags. At the airport and in town, you can find souvenir shops selling T-shirts and postcards depicting a convict against a prison camp backdrop with a sign that reads "Welcome to Kolyma." While locals acknowledge these items as references to a disrespectful Russian movie, they kindly urge tourists not to purchase them.
