Understand
Madura, an island in Indonesia, presents a stark contrast to its neighboring lush and fertile Java. Despite its infertile soil, the resilient Madurese people make a living through subsistence agriculture, tobacco and cloves production, salt panning, fishing, and cattle farming. It's estimated that around 10 million Madurese have left the island in search of better opportunities, leaving behind a population of about 4 million.
Historically, Madura has faced numerous challenges. The island was marked by frequent conflicts, with different parts supporting various kingdoms during medieval Javanese conflicts. In the colonial period, the rulers of East and West Madura often allied with the Dutch and supplied natural resources and troops for protection. World War II brought great suffering to the Madurese under Japanese occupation.
Madura's fortunes may be turning with the opening of the Suramadu Bridge in 2009. The island now has plans for extensive investment and development, aiming to position itself as a tourist destination starting from 2010. Although Madura is off the beaten path for many travelers, these efforts could bring about a positive change for an island that has faced numerous hardships.
In addition to its historical significance, Madura is known for certain cultural practices. Madurese women are famous throughout Indonesia for their secretive sex techniques, known as goyang Madura. These techniques involve using vaginal muscles and herbal preparations like the tongkat Madura. Even in Japan, they gained some popularity a few years ago.
