Understand
Luang Namtha, located in Laos, is a popular stopover for backpackers traveling between China and Laos. It is also a great alternative to the long boat journey between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. Luang Namtha is known for its hill tribe treks in the Luang NamTha NPA - National Protected Area. While it may not have breathtaking sights, the town itself is compact and pleasant. Divided into two parts, the "old" town near the airport (which was bombed during the 1970s war) and the "new" town to the north where most guesthouses and trekking companies are located, Luang Namtha offers a variety of experiences. The town is easily accessible with the "old" town situated next to Highway 3 and the "new" town along Highway 17A, which connects to Muang Sing.
