Understand
Karbala Province, a place of great significance, stands tall as the resting place of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the third Shiite Imam. It was here, at the Battle of Karbala, that Imam Husain was martyred by the army of Ummayad Caliph Yazid I. This event cemented the divide between the Shiite and Sunni branches of Islam. Karbala claims the sacred Mausoleum of Imam Husain and that of Hazrat Abbas Alamdar, the brother of Imam Husain and the brave flag-bearer and commander of Husain's caravan.
Imam Husain's caravan comprised of 96 individuals, including women and children, known as Ahle-Bayt as they represented most of the living members of Prophet Muhammad's family. Tragedy struck on the 10th of Muharram, a significant day in the Islamic lunar calendar, when 72 members of Ahle-Bayt were martyred by Yazid's Army. The remaining individuals were taken prisoner and sent to Damascus.
To Shiite Muslims and certain branches of Sunni Islam, the 10th of Muharram, called "Ashura," holds immense importance as a day of mourning and atonement. The Mausoleums of Imam Husain and Hazrat Abbas Alamdar hold great significance as pilgrimage sites for Shiites, second only to Mecca and Medina.
