Embark on an awe-inspiring journey to the Longji terraces area, renowned for its sprawling network of terraced rice paddy fields that blanket the mountainside in a mesmerizing display. These terraces have given birth to an enchanting tapestry on the hillsides, carefully etching an intricate pattern into the landscape. Set amidst the picturesque villages of the Zhuang and Yao minorities, this region offers abundant opportunities for easy to moderate walks and hikes. Ascend the hillsides to behold breathtaking panoramas of the terraced rice fields and catch glimpses of the idyllic rural life and stunning architectural styles found in the charming forest-fringed villages. Known as the "Dragon Backed Mountain," the Longji terraces area earns its name from the resemblance it bears to the scales on the majestic back of a dragon when the paddies are submerged in spring. Every season unveils a unique spectacle in these fields, from the shimmering ponds during the early stages of growth to the ever-changing hues of the maturing rice. Winter even graces the landscapes with a touch of ethereal snow. If you time your visit just right, you may also witness vibrant rape flowers adorning the surroundings. As you make your way here, relish in the magnificent vistas of the densely forested mountains with their steep slopes. The Longji terraces comprise two distinct but interrelated areas: the Ping'An terrace fields and the JinKeng terrace fields. Each area is blessed with its own collection of villages and hamlets, all within easy walking distance. The Ping'An terrace fields encompass Ping'An village and two smaller hamlets, inhabited by the Zhuang minority. On the other hand, the JinKeng terrace fields feature the vibrant DaZhai village and five quaint hamlets, including the lofty TianTou village, predominantly or completely inhabited by the Yao minority. For a truly immersive experience, plan your visit towards the end of May when the fields are filled with water, marking the first stage of the rice-growing process. At dawn and dusk, witness a magical spectacle as the sun's rays dance on the water-cloaked hillsides, captivating your senses with their shimmering reflections. It's worth mentioning that the ticket office and local bus service are operated by a group of tour operators in collaboration with the local government. However, there has been growing discontent among the villagers over the unequal distribution of profits. To voice their frustration, some villagers have resorted to staging protests, deliberately delaying and, in some cases, even refusing to flood the terraces with water. This ongoing conflict adds a layer of intrigue and urgency to your visit, as you witness the battle for fairness and local empowerment in this enchanting land.
