Welcome to Longreach, a charming town located in the beautiful Outback of the Central West of Queensland, approximately 700 km from the coast, towards the west of Rockhampton. The town's name comes from the "long reach" of the Thomson River upon which it rests. Longreach has a rich history and proudly claims its role in the development of Qantas, Australia's first international carrier. The town's airport hangar served as the first operational base for Qantas, and it was here that the airline built its first six aircraft between 1922 and 1934. Today, this hangar is home to the captivating Qantas Founders Outback Museum. As you explore Longreach, you'll notice that the streets are named after species of birds, adding a unique touch to the town's charm. The east-west streets are named after water birds, while the north-south streets are named after land birds.
