If you're seeking a quieter and more affordable alternative to the bustling tourist areas of Venice, look no further than the hidden gem of Lido. Nestled across the lagoon, Lido offers a refreshing change of pace compared to the traditional heart of Venice. With its tranquil canals, diverse dining options, and breathtaking views of the city, Lido exudes a laid-back island vibe reminiscent of Palm Beach, Florida. As the clock strikes 5 p.m., Lido comes alive with the hustle and bustle of the local residents returning from work across the lagoon. The charming bars and eateries, where everyone seems to know each other, create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's here that you can gain an insider's perspective on life in Lido, as residents gather to chat and watch over their children. Not only is Lido known for its intimate community, but it also holds the prestigious title of being the beach of Venice. Shielding the lagoon from the Adriatic Sea, Lido has a rich cultural heritage and is famous for its annual Movie Festival held between late August and early September. This picturesque island has attracted renowned writers and filmmakers throughout history, including Thomas Mann and Visconti, who found inspiration in its aristocratic ambiance. The luxurious Hotel Des Bains, an iconic example of Liberty Style architecture, has been a backdrop for cinematic masterpieces such as "A Death in Venice" and "The English Patient." Even the legendary spy, James Bond, graced the shores of Lido in "Casino Royale." To delve deeper into the intriguing history of Lido, Robin Saikia's book "The Venice Lido" offers an engaging exploration of the island's literary and social legacy from ancient times to the present day.
