Understand
The western region of Kentucky is enriched with the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, which flow approximately parallel to each other. These rivers have been harnessed by the construction of dams near Grand Rivers for flood control and power generation. The Tennessee River gave rise to the awe-inspiring Kentucky Lake, while the Cumberland River resulted in the formation of Lake Barkley. Discovering the connection between these lakes, a canal was dug at Grand Rivers, creating an extraordinary inland peninsula. This exceptional land between the lakes, spanning 170,000 acres, was acquired by the federal government to establish the captivating Land Between The Lakes (LBL), a national recreation area. LBL offers a plethora of outdoor activities, ranging from invigorating hiking and biking trails to thrilling horseback riding and even off-road vehicle areas. Environmental and historic interpretation is woven into the fabric of LBL, providing hands-on experiences that will leave you exhilarated. As if that wasn't enough, Grand Rivers is the sole community located on both Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. The possibilities for water recreation are boundless in this region, just like the opportunities for camping, hiking, biking, and other thrilling outdoor adventures.
