The eruption of Mount Krakatoa in 1883 was an incredibly intense volcanic event. This massive explosion, with a power equivalent to 150 megatons of TNT, occurred when hot magma came into contact with seawater, causing it to instantly turn into steam. The impact of this blast was so tremendous that it could be heard over 4,000 km away, reaching all the way to Australia and India. The eruption, classified as a level 6 on the Volcano Explosivity Index (VEI), was absolutely colossal. The destruction caused by the eruption was devastating. A series of massive explosions obliterated the entire volcano, resulting in the formation of several gigantic tsunamis, towering up to 40 meters high. The dust and debris from the eruption were launched into the stratosphere, affecting the global weather for several years. Tragically, more than 35,000 people lost their lives due to the tsunamis and eruption. Not even a single person from the pre-1883 island population survived this catastrophic event. Even after the initial eruption, Krakatoa continued to make its mark on history. From 1927 to 1930, underwater eruptions took place at the site of the original volcano. Then, on August 11, 1930, something extraordinary happened—an entirely new volcano and island emerged. This new natural wonder was named "Anak Krakatau," which means "Child of Krakatoa." Interestingly, the correct spelling of the name is Krakatau, but it became widely known as Krakatoa due to newspaper reports about the 1883 explosion. Today, the island of Anak Krakatau is a national park that holds great intrigue for visitors. However, obtaining a permit from Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam (BKSDA) is necessary for those wishing to set foot on the island. It is worth noting that in December 2018, Anak Krakatau experienced another eruption that caused it to lose two-thirds of its height, reducing the cone to a mere 110 meters.
