Kovalam, a popular tourist destination in India, is renowned for its pristine beaches. One of the oldest tourist enclaves in the country, Kovalam gained fame in the 1930s and became a hotspot for hippies in the 1970s. The transformation of this casual fishing village into a bustling tourist hub was initiated by the royal families of Travancore, who recognized its potential and invited Thomas Cook & Sons-UK to develop the region. The beautiful Haylcon Castle, once a private residence of the Queen of Travancore, added to the charm of Kovalam. Today, Kovalam is a well-known beach destination, attracting tourists from all over the world. Kovalam boasts three major beaches along its 17 km coastline. The southernmost beach, known as Lighthouse Beach, is the most popular among visitors. It offers a range of accommodations, restaurants, and shops. The northernmost crescent, known by various names such as Main Beach, Leela Beach, and Samudra Beach, is crowded on weekends, attracting locals as well as day-travelers. In between, there is Hawa Beach, where top-less sunbathing is permitted and appreciated by the locals. Both Lighthouse Beach and Hawa Beach are monitored by vigilant lifeguards provided by the tourism department. It is important to note that Kovalam's atmosphere is more relaxed and laid back compared to Goa, making it an attractive destination for tourists aged between 40 and 60 years young!
