Konye Urgench, formerly known as Gurgandzh, is a historic town that was once a bustling trade center on the Northern Silk Road. Situated at the intersection of major caravan routes, it played a vital role in connecting the South to the Volga and the West to China. During its heyday, Konye Urgench was the capital of the powerful Khwarezm state and earned the titles of "the heart of Islam" and "the capital of thousand wise men". Prominent scholars such as Al Biruni and Avicenna resided in this intellectual hub. Although the city faced destruction at the hands of the Mongols and later Timur, its magnificent monuments still stand as a testament to its past glory. In recognition of its rich history, Konye Urgench was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
