Knigslutter, a city with a rich history, began as a small village called Lutter around 1150. However, it is believed to be much older than that. In the 1200s, the Duke of Brunswick constructed a magnificent water castle just east of the town. This castle provided protection and became the cornerstone for the development of Knigslutter as a market town. Knigslutter was granted its town charter in 1400. One of the main reasons for the city's prosperity was its brewing industry. Knigslutter was home to 73 breweries that produced the famous Duckstein beer, a delicious wheat beer that was even exported to the Netherlands. The Duckstein beer became highly regarded and was enjoyed by the royal courts, including the court of Friedrich Wilhelm I. In 1924, the independent villages of Upper Lutter and Pen were incorporated into Knigslutter, further expanding the city. Then, in 1974, 17 additional districts were added, increasing the population to over 16,000. Today, Knigslutter stands as a vibrant city with a fascinating past and a promising future.
