Knigslutter, a city that originated from the village of Lutter, has a long and fascinating history. The first mention of Lutter dates back to 1150, but its roots likely go even further into the past. In the 13th century, the Duke of Brunswick built a water castle east of the village, leading to the evolution of Knigslutter as a market town. In 1400, the town received its official town charter. One of the key factors in Knigslutter's prosperity was its brewing activities. The city became known for its 73 breweries, producing the renowned Duckstein beer. This delicious wheat beer was even exported to the Netherlands and highly appreciated by royal courts, including that of Friedrich Wilhelm I. In 1924, the independent villages of Upper Lutter and Lutter and Pen were incorporated into Knigslutter. The city experienced another significant growth in 1974 when 17 districts were added, bringing the population to over 16,000 residents.
