Understand
Ko Lipe, also known as the "thin island," is a hidden gem off the coast of Thailand. Its name originated from the Malay name, Pulau Nipis. This exotic paradise belongs to the Tarutao National Park, but it has the unique privilege of being exempt from the park's regulations, allowing development and growth on the island. One of the island's fascinating features is its community of around 500 Urak Lawoi sea gypsies. These sea nomads are descendants of the original inhabitants who settled here 300 years ago. Due to misunderstandings with the Dutch and territorial disputes, they were granted ownership of half the island. Nowadays, they reside mainly on the eastern side near Sunrise Beach, engaging in fishing, farming, and preserving their animist beliefs and traditions. In the 1990s, the island began to flourish with the introduction of resorts, but this development has brought some challenges. Tourism has led to water shortages and waste disposal issues. However, many establishments are stepping up to reduce waste by refilling used plastic or reusable water bottles for free or at minimal cost. Seek out places with white water jugs or standard water dispensers to contribute to this crucial environmental initiative.
