Understand
Prepare to be transported to a land of captivating history when you step foot in Kirkjubjarklaustur. This remarkable place takes its name from a convent that once stood here during Catholic times. The toponyms of the area are steeped in a rich heritage, often paying homage to nuns, the sisters, and the convent itself (known as klaustur in Icelandic). Over the centuries, Kirkjubjarklaustur has been shaped by catastrophic geological events, including the devastating eruption of Lakaggar (also known as Laki) in 1783-1784, which tragically claimed the lives of a quarter of Iceland's population. More recently, volcanic eruptions beneath Vatnajkull glacier and subsequent floods have continued to shape this dramatic landscape. But amidst the wild beauty lies a prosperous agricultural area, creating a stunning contrast. Finding your way around Kirkjubjarklaustur is a breeze. Just follow Klausturvegur, the main road that winds through the village, and keep an eye out for smaller streets branching off, each offering its own allure.
