The Khulo municipality, located just 2.5 hours away from Batumi, is a captivating mountainous area in Georgia. With a total of 78 villages, some of which are quite challenging to reach, this region is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. Centuries ago, Georgia faced numerous invasions, leading to the Islamization of Khulo under the Ottomans. However, the population's Islamic traditions were significantly suppressed during the Russian oppression in the 1870s. Despite this complex history, religious harmony thrives in the region, as prayers echo across the villages several times a day. Khulo remained isolated from tourism for a long time, but now its allure is starting to be recognized. The locals, although conservative due to their isolation, are incredibly welcoming to visitors. However, it is advisable to be mindful of public displays of affection, as the conservative values are still prevalent. So, while you may receive some curious glances, it won't be a major concern as you explore this enchanting corner of Georgia.
