Kawkaban, a magnificent city located 2800 m above sea level, offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient history. This fortified citadel, cauterized with beautiful architectural design, was once the capital of Bani Sharaf Al-Deen. Known for its two palaces adorned with precious stones, Kawkaban earned its name, which means "two stars" in Arabic. It was also renowned as a school of music.
Today, Kawkaban can be reached by road from Shibam number II, near Sanaa. Although it's possible to walk to Kawkaban and soak in the breathtaking view, considering heavy luggage, traveling by car might be a better option. If coming from Sana'a, you can catch shared taxis from the outskirts of the city. Before embarking on this memorable journey, make sure to obtain a travel permit from the tourist police in Sana'a to ensure a hassle-free trip!
