Welcome to the captivating coastal strip of Karnataka! Nestled between the majestic Sahyadri mountain range (Western Ghats) and the sparkling Arabian Sea lies this enchanting region known as Canara, also referred to as Kanara by European traders. The origin of the name Canara has intrigued historians, and while various theories exist, the widely accepted belief is that it is a corruption of the word Kannada. This name derived from the Kannada dynasty that ruled these lands during the Portuguese explorations. The British era saw the region divided into North Canara and South Canara in 1799. North Canara became a part of the Bombay Presidency, while South Canara became an integral part of the Madras Presidency. The winds of change blew after India gained independence in 1947 when the two districts were reorganized into the Mysore state, which later transformed into the present-day Karnataka. To honor their indigenous heritage, the districts were rightly renamed Uttara Kannada (North Kannada) and Dakshina Kannada (South Kannada). (Uttara and Dakshina signify North and South, respectively, in the Kannada language.) Let us not forget the fascinating mythology associated with this region's origin. As per the local belief, Parasurama, an incarnation of the Hindu deity Vishnu, cast his axe into the vast sea and commanded it to recede. The reason behind his act is a subject of debate, but the prevalent version in this region claims that he sought land that was not created by the deity Brahma, using it for his penance.
