Journey back in time on the ancient Silk Road caravan trail, now a legendary route between China and Pakistan. This high-altitude adventure will take you through the Khunjerab Pass, the highest border crossing in the world standing at over 4800 meters (roughly 16,000 feet). To put that into perspective, Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Western Europe, stands at 4810 meters, while Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, is 4421 meters. Cycling enthusiasts will find this the ultimate challenge and can join organized bicycle tours or consult books dedicated to conquering this epic route. Unfortunately, the border itself is not open for cyclists, who must board a bus in either Tashkurgan (China) or Sost (Pakistan). Although you won't be able to cycle across the pass, you can still pedal up to it from the Pakistani side, savoring the breathtaking scenery before returning to Sost to catch your bus.
