This historical route, formerly a caravan trail, has now been transformed into a highway by the Chinese and Pakistani governments. Prepare to reach new heights as you ascend to over 4800 meters (approximately 16,000 feet) at the Khunjerab Pass, the highest border crossing in the world. To put this in perspective, Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain in Western Europe, stands at 4810 meters, and Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States, measures 4421 meters. For passionate cyclists seeking the ultimate challenge, the Silk Road journey is unparalleled. Organized bicycle tours are available, and numerous books have been written about the exhilarating experience of cycling this route. However, it's important to note that the border is currently closed for cyclists. Instead, cyclists can board a bus in either Tashkurgan (China) or Sost (Pakistan), allowing them to marvel at the breathtaking scenery en route to the Khunjerab Pass. Although cyclists cannot cross the border on their bikes, they can still cycle up to the pass from the Pakistani side, enjoying the thrill of the ride before returning to Sost for onward travel.
