At an elevation of approximately 3600m (though some say closer to 3900m), Karakul Lake, also known as the "black lake," is a stunning body of water located about 200km from Kashgar, China. It is situated in the Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, along the renowned Karakoram Highway. As you approach Tashkurgan and the Khunjerab Pass on the China-Pakistan border, you will be captivated by the majestic mountains surrounding the lake. These mountains, including Muztagh Ata, Kongur Tagh, and Kongur Tiube, proudly display their snow-capped peaks throughout the year. Travelers are drawn to Karakul Lake not only for its breathtaking scenery but also for the crystal-clear reflection in its azure and light blue waters. The lake's color ranges from a mesmerizing dark green to vibrant blue, creating a truly unreal spectacle. Along the lake's shores, you will find two Kirgiz settlements. To the east, about 1km from the bus drop-off point, there are a few yurts, allowing visitors to experience the local culture. On the western shores, a village awaits with its charming stone houses.
