Located along the majestic Saloum River, approximately 100 kilometers from its mouth, Kaolack is a city steeped in history. It took over the throne from Kahone, which was once the capital of the kingdom of Saloum. In the 16th century, Kahone, identified by a sacred tree on the right bank of the Saloum River facing Kouyong Island, became the center of the Sereer kingdom. Kaolack, one of its distinctive neighborhoods, was founded by two Sereer princesses from Baol. Another neighborhood, Maka Kahone, was inhabited by Muslims and overseen by religious leaders. The town's population mainly practiced traditional religion and participated in court ceremonies by the river bank, Kouyong Island, and grand baobab trees scattered throughout the area.
