The Kalpitiya peninsula has recently emerged as a popular tourist destination. Its secluded beaches are renowned for their breathtaking sunsets. While accommodations are limited to a few hotels, most of the restaurants are conveniently located within these establishments. The lagoon and surrounding area offer ample opportunities for thrilling activities such as kite surfing and wind surfing. The constant wind during the season makes it ideal for these water sports. Kite surf centers are scattered along the lagoon, ensuring easy access for enthusiasts. However, reaching the main town can be a challenge as there is only an unpaved dirt path through the marshes, which becomes flooded frequently. Tuk tuk drivers, known for their daring nature, can provide transportation, albeit at a higher cost. Keep in mind that the town itself has limited attractions. In terms of kitesurfing, the location in Kalpitiya is rated average to good. The wind conditions are mostly good to very good during the season. However, the lagoon itself may not be suitable for beginners as it is a murky swamp filled with vegetation. The ocean, on the other hand, can offer exciting waves for surfers. For a quieter alternative, Kappalady lagoon, located approximately 15km south of Kalpitiya, is an excellent choice. It attracts fewer crowds and offers a small hut where visitors can relax. The friendly local proprietor sells drinks and snacks and is available to assist with kite launching and landing. Nearby, there are various accommodation options to suit different budgets and plenty of food choices. The best time to visit Kalpitiya for kiting is from April to October. If you're interested in dolphin watching, head to the Western seas, not far from the power plant. Although it is possible to do this activity from hotels on the north side and the lagoon/east side, it does require a longer travel time. The dolphin watching season runs from December to mid-April. Snorkeling and diving enthusiasts will find the best spots on the northern side of Kudawa, where clear waters and vibrant reefs abound. The lagoon also offers good reefs, although the chances of clear water are lower.
