Kabardino-Balkaria is a region located in Russia, named after its native Kabardin and Balkar people. It is known for its rich cultural diversity, with two ethnic territories - one predominantly Kabardin and the other predominantly Balkar. The region also has a significant Russian population. The Kabardians and the Balkars are followers of Sunni Islam. In the past, Kabardino-Balkaria faced a tumultuous history. In 1944, during Stalin's regime, the entire Balkar population was unjustly accused of collaborating with Nazi Germany and forcibly deported. Their name was even removed from the republic's title. It wasn't until 1957 that they were allowed to return. Despite its challenging past, Kabardino-Balkaria officially became a region in 1992. However, it faced further difficulties in 2005 when the capital experienced a violent raid orchestrated by the late Chechen rebel leader, Shamil Basayev. This tragic event claimed the lives of many innocent people. The region has been affected by the instability of the North Caucasus and the conflicts in nearby Chechnya. While agriculture remains the mainstay of the Kabardian economy, there is growing potential in the tourism sector.
