Johor Bahru, a city that was declared only in 1994, has rapidly grown to become Malaysia's third largest city. With a city center population of 497,000 and a metropolitan population of 1.8 million, it is a bustling metropolis. Despite its large land space, Johor Bahru is not as densely populated as other cities in Malaysia. Located near Singapore, Johor Bahru is often compared to its neighbor. However, recent clean-up initiatives have transformed the city, making it a more pleasant place to live. The city has undergone improvements such as greening projects and covering open sewers that used to run through the center, enhancing the overall quality of life. While it may not have the same level of organization and glamour as Singapore, Johor Bahru offers a thrilling experience when it comes to shopping and dining. The city boasts numerous shopping complexes and a wide variety of food establishments, ranging from budget-friendly options to fine dining experiences. While Johor Bahru is known as an industrial hub, it has started to attract tourists as well. It houses several world-renowned electronics manufacturers, and after recovering from the economic crisis in 1997, the city is once again thriving. Additionally, a new immigration and customs checkpoint, the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex, has been constructed, connecting the city center to the Causeway via a 600-meter long flyover.
