Johor Bahru, a city that was only declared as such in 1994, has quickly grown into a bustling urban center. With a population of nearly 500,000 in the city center and 1.8 million in the metropolitan area, Johor Bahru is Malaysia's third-largest city. Although the city covers a large land space, it is not as densely populated as other Malaysian cities. Proximity to Singapore has often led to comparisons, but Johor Bahru has been working hard to establish its unique identity. Recent initiatives to clean up the city, such as greening efforts and infrastructure improvements, have made it a more pleasant place to live. While some may view the city center as slightly run-down, shopping and dining experiences here are truly adventurous. The city offers a wide range of shopping complexes and food establishments, catering to budget-conscious visitors and those seeking fine dining experiences. Despite its industrial reputation, Johor Bahru is now experiencing a resurgence after the economic crisis in 1997. The newly established Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine Complex, connected by a 600-meter flyover, showcases the city's progress and readiness to welcome visitors.
