Understand
Soweto, an acronym for South Western Townships, gained its name in 1963 to describe the group of townships located to the south west of Johannesburg, South Africa. These townships were originally established in response to a bubonic plague outbreak in the inner city slums of Johannesburg in 1904. However, during the apartheid era, many black South Africans were forcibly relocated to Soweto and other townships.
Soweto has come a long way since the challenging times of the 1980s. Visitors to Soweto will now find well-built houses, paved roads, street lights, and modern shopping malls. The township has transformed into a thriving area that is far from the informal shacks and squalor that people often associate with it.
