Since the Six Day War of 1967, East Jerusalem has undergone significant changes. With the Israeli control, many Jewish neighborhoods have been established, adding a whole new dynamic to this historically significant city. One of the noteworthy additions is the first campus of the Hebrew University, located on the majestic Mt Scopus. While the university area and the nearby military base were already under Israeli control, their presence has only grown since then. However, this expansion has not been without controversy. The status of East Jerusalem remains a point of contention in Arab-Israeli relations. In recent years, tensions have escalated, further intensifying the already complex situation. Despite these challenges, efforts have been made to give the Palestinians a greater presence in their claimed capital. Negotiations at Camp David and Taba explored various options, including ceding peripheral villages and neighborhoods. The goal was to achieve a balance between Israeli sovereignty and Palestinian autonomy. Areas considered for cession included parts of the "Holy Basin," downtown East Jerusalem, the Sheikh Jarrah Quarter, and even parts of the Old City. The issue of the Temple Mount/Haram compound remained unresolved, with suggestions of "functional sovereignty" in the upper area. The delicate dance of negotiations continues in this intriguing city of contrasts.
