Looking to embark on an adventure from beautiful Marrakech to the scenic town of Imlil? Look no further! Hop into a shared taxi for a thrilling journey that will transport you to the heart of the High Atlas Mountains in just 75-90 minutes. These taxis can be found at a bustling market located 1km south of the Bab-er-Rob. Don't worry about changing transport at Asni, as some outdated guide books suggest - just sit back and enjoy the ride! Once you arrive in Imlil, you'll find yourself surrounded by the breathtaking landscape. As you exit the taxi, you'll notice a mountain guide agency conveniently located next to the car park where the grand taxis are parked. Here, you'll have several enthusiastic individuals approaching you, offering their guiding services or tempting you with maps. While the maps may seem enticing, they can be pricey and not very helpful. Fear not! It's actually quite simple to navigate the trails without a map or guide. If you're ever unsure, just ask for directions from friendly locals along the way. Please note that starting from March 2019, new rules require hikers to hire a guide when tackling the majestic Toubkal. Checkpoints have been set up along the normal route to ensure compliance, with police or military personnel stationed there. Even though there are different routes to the Toubkal base camp, hikers will only be allowed to pass through if they adhere to all checkpoints along the normal trail. Safety is paramount, and that's why a guide is now necessary for this unforgettable journey. Don't worry about finding a guide - at the first checkpoint, you'll find locals available to offer their services. Just remember, guides are not free, and the minimum price for a guide is 200 Dh per day. So for a typical two-day hike up the mountain, expect to budget an additional 40 Dh, along with accommodation and food expenses at the refuges. If you're up for an even more exciting route, there's an alternative option! Start your adventure with a thrilling walk from Imlil to the Toubkal or CAF Refuge. This scenic 4-6 hour hike will take you on a straight path up the valley, passing through the charming villages of Aroumd and Sidi Chamharouch. However, if you're looking for something a bit different, there's a more interesting route available. Cross the low pass to the west of Imlil, heading towards Azib Tamsoult. Keep high and head south once across the pass, and after 4 hours, camp or stay overnight at the gite. The next day, continue your journey up the gorge, marveling at an awe-inspiring waterfall. Make sure to turn left at a path junction after 1.5 hours, and then take a right at the next junction, about 30 minutes further on. From there, zigzag your way up an enormous scree slope until you reach a pass offering superb views of Toubkal. The entire climb takes approximately 3 hours. Finally, descend with ease towards the southeast, making your way towards the refuges. While this route may not be shown on many maps, it's a recently constructed path that adds an extra element of thrill to your unforgettable journey in the High Atlas Mountains. So grab your gear and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
