Jay, a town in New York, has a rich history and a beautiful landscape. It was originally known as Mallorys Bush, named after one of its earliest settlers. The area quickly grew with settlements along the river and on the plateaus. Lumber and iron were abundant, and the soil was fertile. In the early 19th century, a bustling town called AuSable Forks emerged around the lumber and forging business. Jay's fields were expansive, offering breathtaking views. The town's uniqueness stemmed from its iron ore processing community. One can't help but notice the stunning scenery, with the AuSable River flowing through the landscape, surrounded by streams and freshets. The river has played a significant role in Jay's history, sometimes bringing success and at other times disaster. One unfortunate event was the destruction of Jay's most unusual attraction, The Land of Make Believe. This theme park featured miniature houses that represented different professions and stood near a curve in the river. Sadly, floods plagued the park, ultimately forcing its closure in 1980. However, some of its original buildings by the talented designer Arto Monaco can still be found at Storytown and Santas Workshop. Jay's connection to nature, its fascinating past, and the remnants of The Land of Make Believe make it a captivating destination for visitors.
