For a long time, reaching the Jardines del Rey was only possible by boat, adding an air of intrigue to this stunning destination. Even the legendary Ernest Hemingway, during the Second World War, had thrilling adventures hunting German U-boats in this very area, which inspired his novel "Islands in the Stream." However, in the 1980s, the Cuban government decided to construct a causeway connecting Cayo Coco and the mainland. This revolutionary project created a road that opened up the not-to-be-missed tourist destinations of Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. Fast forward to 1993 when the first hotel, the Colonial, inaugurated on these breathtaking islands. Although some areas remain undeveloped, they are now promoted as an ecotourism haven, preserving their pristine natural beauty. Explore the untouched beaches, immerse yourself in the vibrant underwater world, and indulge in the wonders of ecotourism when you visit the Jardines del Rey.
Get in
To reach your destination in this section, you have a few options. There is an international airport on Cayo Coco, making it convenient for travelers arriving by air. If you are already on the mainland, you can drive across the causeway to reach Cayo Coco. Please note that there is a toll to be paid when crossing the causeway. Additionally, there is a marina on Cayo Guillermo, providing another means of transportation to the area. It is important to note that until 2008, specific authorization was required for Cubans to enter these locations. However, since then, the restrictions have been relaxed, allowing any Cuban to enter by paying a fee. This change has made it easier for Cubans to visit these beautiful destinations.
