Understand
Isle Royale is truly an exceptional destination, offering a wilderness experience unlike any other. As a wilderness preserve, it prioritizes the preservation of its wildlife and natural beauty above all else. However, it also welcomes visitors who seek to immerse themselves in its unspoiled landscapes.
When you visit Isle Royale, you'll find yourself exploring established trails and enjoying its accessible lakes, while adhering to leave-no-trace camping protocols. Keep in mind that modern conveniences and comforts are limited on the island. "Running water" simply means a creek, and the only toilets available are pit toilets. Some of them are stocked with toilet paper, but it's always a good idea to bring your own or be prepared to improvise.
Due to Lake Superior's harsh winters, the park is closed from November to mid-April. Limited access is available before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. It's worth noting that Isle Royale is the only U.S. National Park Service park that completely shuts down for the winter. This, along with its geographic isolation and rugged terrain, results in fewer visitors compared to other national parks. However, those who do visit stay an average of 4-5 days, and many are inspired to return due to the park's undeniable allure. Visit Isle Royale and discover its untouched beauty for yourself.
