From the vibrant city of Granada, you can embark on an adventurous journey to Rivas. Take a thrilling ride on the colorful chicken bus, locally known as the "Camioneta de pollos." This ride will cost you C$50 (June 2019). Once you reach Rivas, you can hop on a boat or ferry from San Jorge near Rivas to reach the main port, Moyogalpa. The boat fare ranges from C$35 to C$50, depending on the type of boat. Shared taxis from Rivas bus terminal to San Jorge should not exceed C$20 per person, but be cautious of taxi drivers who may try to overcharge. Alternatively, you can take a chicken bus from the roads surrounding the Rivas bus terminal to reach the boat at San Jorge for just C$10 (June 2019). Don't forget to keep a receipt for the tourist tax of C$33/US$1 upon departure (June 2019 prices). Surrounding the ferry terminal, you'll find a plethora of hotels and restaurants within walking distance. Buses conveniently pick up and drop off at the terminal in Moyogalpa, and taxis are also available, but be prepared to negotiate the fare. If you're traveling from Managua, there are a few direct "expresso" chicken buses to San Jorge, allowing you to bypass the need for a taxi from Rivas. Three ferries operate daily from San Jorge to San Jos del Sur, located on the west side of the island, departing at 9:30am, 2pm, and 5pm. In the past, you could embark on an exciting ferry journey from Granada to Altagracia for less than US$2. However, due to low water levels caused by a drought in 2014 and subsequent cancellations, this route is currently unavailable as of June 2019. However, as of February 2022, the ferry is back in operation. It departs Granada at 2pm on Mondays, arriving in Altagracia at 6pm (or sometimes even at 9pm, so flexibility is key). From there, it takes approximately 8 hours to reach San Carlos, arriving just after sunrise the next day at a cost of 150$C. On Tuesdays and Fridays, there is a ferry available from San Carlos to the Island, providing a thrilling 12-hour ride for about US$2.50. Please note that the ferry crossings may not always be smooth, especially if you choose the smaller and more affordable lancha option. If you decide to sit indoors on the smaller boats, be aware that water splashing through the windows, even when closed, may result in a refreshing sprinkle. During July and August 2015, the ferries from Granada and San Carlos were not operational due to low water levels, so it's always advisable to check the latest information before planning your journey.
