Ikeda, located at the crossroads of central Shikoku, is a picturesque town nestled on the banks of the Yoshino River, surrounded by lush green mountains. Throughout history, Ikeda has been an important commercial and travel hub for the region. In the past, it served as a gateway for products from the Iya Valley and other areas, which were transported by boats down the river to markets in Tokushima City and beyond. The town also gained fame for its high school baseball team, which dominated the national championship in the 1960s and 70s. While Ikeda may have lost some of its former glory, it still retains its charm. The tobacco industry, once a major source of income, collapsed in the 1980s, leading to the transformation of the town's former processing plant into a bustling shopping center. While boats no longer ply the route to Tokushima due to damming, the resulting lake now offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Although Ikeda's main shopping arcade may not be as bustling as it once was, the town still serves as the administrative center for the area, providing essential services such as banking and healthcare. For travelers, Ikeda remains a convenient transportation hub for exploring the region. While the nearby valleys and mountains may lack the same level of amenities, Ikeda offers a central base with a decent selection of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options. However, the true splendor of the region lies further afield, in places such as the breathtaking Iya Valley and the mesmerizing Oboke/Koboke. Those seeking a deeper immersion in Japan's natural beauty and cultural experiences may find accommodation in these areas more aligned with their expectations.
