Understand
The village holds great historical significance due to its connection with Albert Chmielowski, widely known as Saint Brother Albert. Born here, he became a prominent figure through his involvement in the January Uprising. Despite suffering severe injuries that led to the amputation of his leg, Albert persevered and eventually settled in Paris before returning to his native Lesser Poland. It was there that he dedicated his life to charitable endeavors and became a monk. He passed away on Christmas Day in 1916 at his hermitage in Kalatwki, near Zakopane. Albert was later proclaimed a saint in 1989.
