Understand
Founded in 1931, Igarka derives its name from the channel it resides on, named after a local fisherman named Yegor Shiryaev. However, this city gained notoriety as the starting point for Stalin's ill-fated railway to nowhere. Tragically, the project failed, leading to the death of thousands of Gulag laborers.
Nevertheless, Igarka still plays a vital role as the main port for shipping timber harvested from the Yenisei River basin to Europe. With a population of approximately 6,000 people, the city has experienced a steady decline over the years.
