Understand
Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, has a rich history that dates back to the early settlers who arrived in 1840. These settlers initially established themselves in Petone before moving up the Hutt river valley in search of suitable land for farming. While much of the valley has now been developed into urban areas, there are still pockets of rural land and vast open spaces to be explored. In the early years, Petone experienced regular flooding, leading the settlers to relocate the Wellington settlement to its current Lambton Harbour location. As a result, many of the street names in Petone were reallocated to the new Wellington streets. This unique history has resulted in many addresses in the Greater Wellington area not being unique. Wellingtonians often simply state their address without mentioning the suburb, as it is understood that they reside in Wellington. However, those living in the Hutt Valley may add the specific suburb or city to their Wellington region postal address, providing further distinction.
Get in
The Hutt Valley in New Zealand is a stunning destination with limited road access. There are only four roads in and out of the valley, three of which are part of the state highway system. These roads lead from Porirua and Wellington to Lower Hutt, and from Featherston through the Rimutakas to Upper Hutt. The other road is a scenic drive from Waikanae to Upper Hutt, but please note that it is mostly single lane. Discover the beauty of the Hutt Valley and its unique roadways!
