Huatugou, an oil-drilling town at the heart of economic prosperity, offers an intriguing glimpse into the world of black gold. As you venture through the low hills near town, you'll witness majestic oil derricks towering above, guardians of the area's economic lifeline. Keep your eyes peeled for small pools of thick tar, seeping mysteriously to the surface. Nature's own reminder of the liquid riches hidden beneath the earth's surface. But be forewarned - Huatugou is no ordinary town. It is a closed town, shrouded in secrecy and mystery. A forbidden realm for foreign visitors, only those with a special permit granted by the Aliens Entry and Exit Administration (AEEA) can dare to tread its hallowed grounds. To obtain the coveted Alien Travel Permit (ATP), you must embark on a thrilling quest to the AEEA office inside the central PSB station. This is where your adventure begins, and where your visa may also find its extension. Don't fret, fellow traveler, for the AEEA officers are known for their friendly demeanor and knack for deciphering English. Make your desires known - a journey to Huatugou, en route to Xinjiang - and for a mere Y50, the folded form of the ATP shall be yours. Its enigmatic contents, written solely in Chinese, revealing the destinations you are permitted to explore. Golmud and Dunhuang, gatekeepers to Huatugou's wonders, stand as formidable obstacles. The bus stations there will not grant a ticket without your precious ATP. Yet, tales have been whispered by brave souls who managed to hitch a ride on the bus, just as it departed, paying their fare on board, evading the necessity of the permit. While checkpoints dot the journey, the courage of these travelers prevailed, as they slipped through the fingers of authority. In this land of secrets, even the lodgings carry silent observers. Foreign guests are to be reported, under the watchful gaze of unknown eyes. But fear not, for Huatugou's transitory nature may afford you leniency. A mere day within its borders raises no alarm. However, linger beyond, or seek solace in other towns nearby, and the watchful eye shall bear witness. If caught without a permit, pleading ignorance may grant you respite, though scolding and close monitoring shall follow until your departure is secured. Beware, for confrontation with an officer on a bad day may result in an inconspicuous journey backward, retracing the steps you made towards this forbidden land.
