Get in
Houghton and Hancock, two vibrant towns in Michigan, can be reached through two main routes. If you're traveling from the south, US-41 or M26 are the main options. Taking US-41 will lead you to the campus of Michigan Tech, where you'll be surrounded by modern university buildings, parking lots, and fraternity houses. Continuing the drive will take you to downtown Houghton, characterized by charming red sandstone buildings lined along the canal. Crossing the lift bridge from Houghton will bring you to Hancock, situated on the ridge on the north side of the channel.
On the other hand, if you're coming from central Wisconsin, Minnesota, or the Western UP, taking M26 is the way to go. Along this route, you'll pass by the iconic Walmart on the right and admire the scenic views of an eroded cliff on the left. Similar to US-41, M26 also crosses the lift bridge connecting the two towns.
For those traveling by air, the Houghton County Memorial Airport offers a few flights each day from Chicago. Although these flights might be a bit pricey, the convenience of being just 5 miles north of Houghton/Hancock makes it a convenient option. Car rental services from Avis are available on-site, and Neil's Cab service can also be utilized for transportation within the area.
