Hormuz, a city located on the Straits of Hormuz, is strategically important due to its control over traffic in and out of the Persian Gulf. This narrow stretch of water has been mentioned frequently in the news for its significance in shipping routes and potential for disruption.
In medieval times, Hormuz served as the capital of its province, which is still known as Hormozgn. However, the capital has since shifted to Bandar Abbas. Interestingly, to escape attacks from the Mongols, one ruler moved the capital to Hormuz Island and established a town called New Hormuz. This move was short-lived, as peace with the Mongols led to the capital returning to its original location.
