The farmers and herdsman of Hinterstein take great pride in their careful land management practices. In fact, their efforts were recognized with the European environmental prize a few years ago. Above the village, on the higher levels, you'll find several cow-alps, where hundreds of cattle graze during the summer months. When autumn arrives, you can witness the spectacular Viehscheid, as these cows descend from the alps, adorned with majestic bells. These alpine cabins, known as Alphtten, are also favorite destinations for hikers who seek a moment of rest. Here, you can indulge in a delicious meal of hearty bread, bacon, and mountain cheese, rejuvenating yourself for the journey ahead.
