The historical center of Hildesheim, also known as the "Nuremberg of the north," used to be a stunning collection of over 1900 half-timbered buildings. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, 90% of the center was destroyed. Luckily, some parts of the southern center managed to survive. Today, the center mainly consists of postwar buildings from the 1950s to the 1970s. However, there is good news! Many historical monuments have been reconstructed, with the changes made over the last few centuries being undone to restore the original form of the buildings. It's important to note that two church buildings in the center have even been declared UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1985. Explore the rich history and architectural wonders left behind in Hildesheim's center!
