Immerse yourself in the charm of Hekou, a town that you can easily explore on foot as it is within walking distance of the border post. Just across the bridge lies the alluring town of Lao Cai. The border between the two towns operates from 8AM to 11PM (7AM-10PM Vietnamese time), providing ample time to discover both sides. For those seeking an unforgettable train adventure, Hekou North Train Station is your gateway to Kunming. This new railway, inaugurated in December 2014, offers two daily train services between Hekou and Kunming. Departing at 9:28, 12:45, 16:00, and 22:48, these train journeys offer a thrilling experience that spans six to seven hours. Tickets are priced at RMB 70 for a hard seat and RMB 160 for a soft seat, allowing you to enjoy the picturesque landscapes in comfort. Alternatively, buses offer a convenient mode of transportation for travelers from various destinations within Yunnan, including Kunming. The bus ride from Kunming to Hekou takes approximately six hours and offers multiple departure times throughout the day (9:40, 10:40, 12:40, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00). Some routes, such as those originating from Jinghong, may require a bus transfer in Mengzi. It is important to note that certain buses may not reach Hekou directly and instead stop at a point west of town. From there, a delightful hour-long walk along the Honghe river will take you to the border post. Alternatively, you can easily find taxis waiting to transport you to the town for a reasonable fare of approximately 10 currency units.
