Heathrow Airport, also known as London Heathrow (LHR), is not just your ordinary airport. It is a colossal complex divided into four terminals - T2, T3, T4, and T5. With its immense size, it could easily be mistaken for a small city. In fact, it is often referred to as an "aerotropolis." Established in the late 1940s, Heathrow is not only London's main airport but also the primary air gateway into the United Kingdom. It proudly holds the title of being the busiest airport in the world for international passenger traffic and serves as Europe's top hub airport. In the past, Heathrow faced challenges due to its massive scale, increased security requirements, and inadequate development to keep up with its growth. This resulted in overcrowding, long queues, inefficiency, and delays. However, since the opening of Terminal 5 in March 2008, the situation has significantly improved. Despite some initial hiccups with the brand new terminal, travelers now experience smoother operations. Terminal 2, the airport's original terminal, underwent redevelopment and reemerged as The Queen's Terminal in June 2014. Terminal 1, on the other hand, closed in 2015 for demolition and will pave the way for the expansion of the new Terminal 2. Looking towards the future, the British Government has approved a highly controversial plan to construct a third runway north of the existing airfield boundary. This expansion project, expected to materialize in the mid-2020s, will come at a cost. It will eradicate the entire village of Sipson, multiple nearby housing estates, and the existing "Heathrow Strip" of hotels, igniting debate and making headlines.
