Understand
The town of Hay River in the Northwest Territories of Canada is a hidden gem on the beautiful shores of Great Slave Lake. As the transportation hub of the north, it serves as a bustling center where goods are transferred from rail and truck to barges, ready to be taken to isolated northern communities and industrial sites. With all-season road access, Hay River is a year-round destination that offers endless outdoor adventures and stunning natural beauty. Don't be fooled by the town's appearance; while it may not be the prettiest, the surrounding area will take your breath away!
Get in
If you're looking for an adventure, consider driving from either Edmonton or Yellowknife to reach this exciting destination. The drive from Edmonton takes approximately 13 hours, while the drive from Yellowknife is a bit shorter, around 5 hours. Just be sure to avoid the spring breakup or fall freeze up, as the ferry crossing or ice road may not be operating during those times. If driving isn't your thing, you can also take the Greyhound bus from Edmonton or Yellowknife. Or better yet, fly direct from Edmonton on Northwestern Air, a small northern airline that operates 5 days a week. Another option is to fly from Yellowknife on First Air or Buffalo Airways (and you can get to Yellowknife from the south on Westjet or AirCanada).
